Drive Slowly

It may seem like common sense to slow down when the road is full of snow because it’s very slippery, but there’s actually more to it than that. A patch of hidden black ice could pop up ahead without you noticing in enough time to avoid it. Driving slowly also allows you more reaction time to avoid other drivers’ mistakes! 

Accelerate & Decelerate Slowly

Never push down hard or suddenly on the brake or gas with your foot while driving through the snow. This causes your tires to lose traction, and you just may skid right off the road. So, stay calm at all times. And be sure to break slowly and accelerate slowly as well.

Inflate Tires Properly

When your tires are under or over-inflated, this could lead to a flat tire or even worse, a blowout. The last thing you need is to be stranded on the side of the road in the snow trying to change a tire. Be sure to check on your tire pressure year-round! 

Keep Cruise Control Off

Never use cruise control while driving in snow or on icy roads. You must be 100% alert and cruise control tends to give drivers a sense of relaxation that could lead to an accident. Keep your eyes on the road and your foot in control of the gas and brake pedals. 

Increase Following Distance

When driving in normal conditions, the general rule is to stay no less than 3-4 seconds behind the car in front of you. However, when driving on icy roads or in snow, you need to increase your following distance to no less than 6-8 seconds. The faster you drive, the more distance there should be.

Winterize Your Car

Make sure your car is ready for the winter weather. Top off your fluids and check your brakes for wear and tear. Get an oil change and check your transmission fluid. Also, make sure you have no less than a half of a tank of gas in case of emergencies.
